SILVER LININGS

“I’m fine,” she lied, “happy even.” She hoped if she painted on a smile and said these words often enough it’d somehow make them true. But the truth was she felt the sadness of the little raincloud that always followed her, even in this otherwise perfect moment. The day her cloud had first appeared she had found it difficult to leave her bed. Maybe she had thought that if she closed her eyes a little longer she’d wake to find this cloud had only been a dream, an unpleasant sadness lingering from a nightmare. But when each time she woke she found it was still there. She thought maybe if she left her bed the cloud would not follow her, but no matter where she found herself she found the cloud there also. After a while she found it very hard to remember life before her cloud had appeared. She found it even more difficult to believe that someday she may not find herself in its shadow. At the very least she tried to hope that there was some truth in what they say about clouds and silver linings. If her days were to always be this dark and dreary perhaps she could still find some beauty in them.
